Stop Using Plastic Baggies: The Ultimate Guide to Storing Your Herb

Let’s talk about stash storage. If you are still keeping your material in the thin plastic sandwich baggie it came in, you are doing yourself a massive disservice.

Improper storage destroys potency, kills flavor, and turns fresh material into harsh, crumbly dust. To keep your stash fresh for months, you need to protect it from its four worst enemies: Air, Light, Heat, and Moisture.

Enemy #1: Air (Oxygen)

Oxygen degrades organic matter. It’s why an apple turns brown when you leave it on the counter. Plastic baggies are porous and let air seep in and out constantly.

  • The Fix: Get an airtight glass jar. Mason jars are the cheap, classic standard, but dedicated stash jars with silicone gaskets offer an even better seal.

Enemy #2: Light (UV Rays)

Just like the sun will fade the paint on your car, UV light breaks down the active compounds in your herb. Sitting in a clear jar on a sunny windowsill is a death sentence for your stash.

  • The Fix: Keep your glass jars in a dark drawer or cabinet. Better yet, invest in a UV-proof stash jar made from dark violet or opaque glass.

Enemy #3: Heat

High temperatures dry out the essential oils (terpenes) that give your material its flavor and aroma.

  • The Fix: Store your stash in a cool place, ideally around 65°F to 70°F. And no, do not put it in the refrigerator or freezer! The fluctuating temperatures and moisture in a fridge will cause mold, and freezing will make the trichomes brittle and break off. A cool, dark closet is perfect.

Enemy #4: Moisture (Humidity)

Too much humidity, and you invite mold. Too little, and your material dries out and smokes harshly. The sweet spot for storing dry herb is between 58% and 62% relative humidity.

  • The Fix: Buy a few humidity control packs (like Boveda or Integra Boost). You just drop a little packet into your airtight jar, and it automatically adds or removes moisture to keep the humidity exactly where it needs to be. They are incredibly cheap and arguably the best upgrade you can make to your storage setup.

Ditch the plastic. Spend a few dollars on a good glass jar and a humidity pack, and enjoy fresh, flavorful sessions every single time.
